• Once the active phase of treatment is completed the braces are removed and retainers fitted. Retainers are designed to maintain the corrected occlusion while the surrounding bone and soft tissues adapt to the new tooth positions. Initially these are worn 12 hours per day for the first 24 months and we will monitor the wearing of these as part of your treatment. After this, we recommend that the retainers are worn on a slowly decreasing basis.
  • Retainers will always need to be worn – just the amount of time that they are worn will decrease. We will never recommend that a patient stop wearing their retainers. If a patient does not wear the retainers, their teeth will move.
